13 Ben Wa Balls – A Complete How-to Guide and Product Reviews

Ben Wa Balls – also known as Geisha, Orgasm, Love, Pleasure, Kegal, Duotone, or Venus balls.

There is also a plethora of misspellings including Benwa, Ben Wah, Benwah, Benoit, Ben woit, Ben Wall, Benwall, or Ben Wass.

For most new users, these little guys are also shrouded in mystery – while dildos, sex machines, and even anal toys are pretty straightforward and can be figured out with little effort.

WHAT ARE THEY?

Simply, they are balls you put inside your vagina that can help in exercising and strengthening the pelvic floor muscles which can increase sexual pleasure, aid bladder control problems, as well as help with several other medical problems.

The different kinds include:

  • Light-weighted – better for beginners
  • Weighted – better for experienced users or increasing strength
  • Adjustable weights – most versatile between sex and health goals
  • With cords – easier to remove
  • Without cords – easier to use during sex
  • Beginner balls – some models, like Duotone balls are made specifically for beginners

WHAT SIZE SHOULD I GET?

Bigger ones are better for newbies because they are easier to hold onto. Most of them are average to large anyway, so you’ll be fine.

The ones to watch out for are the small styles (about the size of a marble) – those are for pros.

Weights vary from as light as 10g to ones in the 110g range.

WHAT KIND SHOULD I GET?

Medical grade silicone or stainless steel will be easy to clean and safe for your body (and the easiest to find).

There are only a small number of glass ones that are acceptable (some glass toys can contain heavy metals and other harmful products).

ABS plastic is fine.

There are debates on whether jade is okay.

WHAT DO THEY FEEL LIKE?

Sensations are different for each person depending on your PC (pubococcygeus muscle) strength, if you’ve had kids or not, your medical history etc. Some find it pleasant, some feel next to nothing.

What you will feel is that there’s something in your vagina. And, if there’s a movable weight inside, you’ll feel the gentle sensation of them moving around with your body.

And, a side note about  “vibrating” balls…

They’re technically not BWBs. They are bullet vibrators on a string, a not the best idea for pelvic floor exercises. They are fine for some fun pillow time, but I wouldn’t treat them the same or use them the same way (despite advertisements selling the idea to make more money).

HOW FAR CAN I PUT THEM IN?

During exercise sessions, you should put them in so the lower tip/part of the toy is just inside you.

If you have sex with them, they can go all the way to the back.

“You can have sex with them in?!”

Yep. It can feel quite nice for both partners. But don’t try this until you’re comfortable with them during solo use.

Also, if they have a connector cord, get the thinner ones, since the thicker cords might be uncomfortable. There is also the choice of one or two balls (whatever feels good). You also probably shouldn’t have rough or “pounding” sex with them.

If they start feeling uncomfortable, take them out.

I’M NOT HAVING AN ORGASM WITH THEM!

These are NOT meant to bring you to orgasm – which is why many people end up disappointed (and another reason product reviews are really mixed).

This, in major part, comes from misleading advertising, incorrect advice, or re-sellers not even knowing what they’re for.

The orgasm part comes from making your PC muscles stronger (hence the exercises). They can feel pleasant if you use them during intercourse, but it’s not the catalyst for the big O.

WILL THEY GET LOST?

They won’t get lost because they can’t go past the cervix.

The “getting lost” idea only comes into play with anal toys. The anus does not have a barrier like a cervix. Besides, Kegel balls should never be used for anal play.

HOW DO I TAKE CARE OF THEM?

Warm water and mild soap (before and after use) will get them clean as long as the material is non-porous. Antibacterial soap is fine if you want to go that route. Sex toy cleaner is acceptable if you’re in a pinch.

Be careful to clean around any nooks and crannies where fluids could get trapped.

Also, be wary of the cord material.

Sanitizing them once in a while is also a good idea. This can be done with boiling water, a 10% bleach solution, or rubbing alcohol (depending on what the toy material is, so read the manufacturer’s instructions).

ANY OTHER HEALTH ISSUES?

I’ve heard lots of good things regarding childbirth, pregnancy stuff, vaginal prolapses etc, but talk to a health professional before you use BWBs to treat or help any ailments or anything during or after pregnancy etc.

HOW LONG UNTIL I SEE RESULTS?

It depends on your pelvic floor strength and health. The average is two weeks before you see a difference, which is pretty much the same as working any muscle group.

WHAT ARE KEGAL EXERCISES?

First, you have to find your PC muscles. This can be harder than expected.

The easiest way is by pretending you’re trying to stop pee mid-stream by contracting the vagina and the urethra.

However, following these steps is better:

  • Apply a little water-based lube
  • Slide the BW balls in until they are just inserted (not back to the cervix)
  • You should be able to feel the tip with your finger
  • When you contract, if the bottom tip moves AWAY (it’s going inside you), you’re using the right muscles
  • If the tip comes out, you’re using the wrong muscles
  • It should feel like your pulling up and holding the toy back inside you
  • If your muscles are weak, you might not feel them move at all in the beginning
  • Don’t use your abdominal or buttock muscles
  • Contract, hold for 5 – 10 seconds
  • Relax for 5 – 10 seconds

CAN I WEAR THEM OUTSIDE THE HOUSE?

You can, but the more movement means the harder it will be to keep them inside.

Positions in order of difficulty are: laying down, sitting, standing, doing squats, during daily routines around the house or taking a walk.

Newbies should focus on easier positions at first.

HOW LONG SHOULD I USE THEM?

Session lengths can last 5 minutes and up.

Beginners should start with 5 to 10 minutes, or until they are tired but not longer than 20.

Sessions (like when walking or doing housework) can go longer if you are more experienced.

IT’S NOT WORKING!

Don’t be discouraged if you can’t quite get it immediately. Like any new exercise, it takes time to see results.

OUCH! WHAT THE HELL?!

In the beginning, don’t be surprised if there is some soreness afterward.

If there is a considerable amount of pain (that feels beyond the normal muscle burn), stop using them and talk to a doctor.

Think of the entire experience like going to a gym and lifting weights for the first time. If you’ve never done it, you’re not going to go for the heaviest weights and do curls for an hour.

Go light and until you feel an adequate burn. If there’s stabbing unbearable pain, you’re going to stop doing it.

Also, be aware that you have to maintain “correct form” in order to work the right muscle group, otherwise, the workout is for nothing. BWB reps are no different.

CAN I GO TO THE BATHROOM?

In theory, you can pee while wearing kegal balls. However, it’s not the best idea if you’re not sure you can hold them in. They could fall out and plop in the toilet. Have fun fishing them out and not having nightmares about all the grubbies/bacteria.

And on the note of bathroom stuff, wearing them on your period should be fine. The only thing you have to worry about is staining the cord (if it’s that kind of material).

THEY WON’T COME OUT!

Don’t freak out. It can sometimes happen. There’s no need to run to the emergency room yet.

You can try:

  • Standing up and walking around
  • Jumping up and down
  • Adding more lube
  • Coughing
  • Squatting and coughing
  • Squatting and pushing
  • Coaxing them down with your finger
  • Above all else, RELAX

If you’ve tried everything, and nothing is working, and it’s been over a day, maybe then go to your OBGYN – but remember you’re not in any danger.

This is also why BWBs with a cord is a good idea. It has its own set of trade-offs (like discomfort during sex – if you plan on using them that way), but it makes for very easy take out.

ARE THERE ANY DANGERS?

In general, sex toys exist in a muddled soup of “good vs. horrible”. The industry isn’t regulated that well, and so much crap comes over (mostly from China) from where it’s cheapest to make.

It’s not a good idea to go cheap at the expense of your private parts. However, just because a product is expensive, doesn’t mean it’s going to be entirely safe. Do some research and buy from reputable sellers/makers etc.

NOTE: Infections can occur if you don’t take care of them properly.

BEN WA BALL REVIEWS

Take a look below for some recommendations on what to buy and what to avoid.

Keep in mind that the prices may vary (greatly at times) depending on where or when you buy them – take these numbers as estimates.

1. NURSE HATTIE SET ($80)

This might be one of the most well-known box sets. Make sure you get them on sale though ($80 can be a bit steep for some).

I like how now the design is tapered which might be more comfortable for some people to insert. The ABS plastic covered in silicone is super safe.

They also make a good point on how “one size” does not fit all. So, it’s either for weight graduation (12-83g) or size accommodation, or both.

2. LELO LUNA BEADS ($60)

I usually give Lelo a pretty hard time about the price of their products vs. the quality of their vibrator motors. However, I will 100% give them credit for making some decent Kegel balls.

Luna Beads are body safe (ABS plastic and a silicone harness) and include two 28g and two 37g balls. This is nice because you can switch them up to get different weights as you progress through your exercises (as well as minimal slippage).

The 1-year warranty is also nice.

I tried the boiling recommendation, and yes it’s fine as long as you don’t go over the 5-minute mark (I did mine at 3 minutes). You also can not put them directly in a metal pot of boiling water. I just poured some into a bowl.

There are quite with no “rattling” or sounds coming from them. The noise I heard was just “internal” (like when your breathing sounds really loud when you are underwater).

3. MYA BY L’AMAUROSE ($60)

These aren’t bad, even the weight is manageable (28g-82g). But they’re not great.

I found there wasn’t much room for the weights inside to rattle around, hence not delivering the sensations they advertised and for the PC muscles to react how they should.

The design is fine, but I don’t like the middle part of the double bead set.0

It’s a pain to clean, even if it’s silicone. I would wait for a fantastic sale before buying.

4. INTIMATE ROSE SET ($50)

Fifty bucks for a silicone set isn’t that bad. You will just need to make sure that you’ll stick to your exercises and made good use of the 25g – 124g of kegel resistance.

It might not be the traditional looking double orb, but the principle is the same, and cords are always a good thing.

5. BEYOND AROUSED ($40)

I despise 50 Shades of Grey books. However, Lovehoney did make a good set of Kegel balls in the book’s name.

The weight options are really varied (15, 25, 35, and 55g) which makes for extra combinations of 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, and 90 grams.

6. NATURAL STONE EGGS BY NECTAR ($35)

I’m on the fence about this one. On one hand, I love natural material toys, and the stone looks gorgeous. These aren’t going to have the rattle since they should just be solid stone (the movement of weighted balls inside isn’t a deal breaker if you have them or not). There will be more slippage compared to a silicon ball.

On the other hand, I can’t see is how the attachment on the tip is fixed to the toy and if there will be any cleaning problems. I would also love to know what sealant/finish they use to make it non-porous. If there is NO finish, however, these aren’t something to use. There’s also no info about the weight.

7. BANGCHIC ROSE EGGS ($26)

These are examples of poorly made stone balls. The stone itself would be fine as long as it was sealed (which we don’t know).

Also, the way the string goes through the top makes for some pain in the ass cleaning (you would have to find a way to clean through the hole).

Not to mention the cord materials is a bad choice.

The whole thing screams vaginal infection.

8. VENUS BALLS BY DORCEL ($22)

The bulbs for this one were bigger than I thought. Which was both awkward and good – awkward because they were very snug to fit it (needed lots of lube and to go really slowly) and the second bulb was a bit of a bitch to insert because the connector cord in the middle was really flexible (and things were slippery).

After a few choice words, it got them in. Here’s where the size part is a good thing … they didn’t slide out at all. I could walk around with them in and they didn’t budge.

The weights inside jingled around but I didn’t feel much internally. Since these were the first I used, I relaxed on the sofa to do my exercises. I could feel them with each flex and it was a surprisingly nice sensation against my g-spot.

These are perfect for beginners, especially because of the cord, which makes for easy removal. I highly recommend them.

9. PLEASURE PEARLS ($20)

I haven’t tried these. However, reviews are pretty good and the ABS plastic is a safe choice.

The only thing that might be a problem is the size. They are a bit on the small side and best for experienced users … or newbies who don’t plan on leaving the house.

Also, the price tag isn’t anything to turn your no up at.

It says 48g – I’m assuming that’s for each one?

10. STAINLESS STEEL BALLS BY OPTISEX ($20)

The Amazon page states they are stainless steel, but there aren’t any sellers beyond Amazon, Ebay, or other such outlets that offer this same product so I can do a comparison.

I really, REALLY want to believe they are body safe metal. If so, they would be another good find. (I’d still be careful though).

There will be slippage, which might make them better suited for people who have used them before.

11. KORO BALLS ($14)

I actually really like these. They were much easier to get in, however, this also means that they aren’t as easy to “feel” when you’re exercising and don’t stay in as easily when you’re up and moving around.

My friend tried them also for her first BenWaBall experience and she told me she wasn’t thrilled – mostly because she couldn’t feel them to tell if she was doing the exercises right and didn’t have enough “muscle” burn the next day to feel like she really got a Kegal workout.

I’m going to save these boys for future use. I can also confirm it’s silicone (I burned the crap out the harness, cord, and balls. Thumbs up.

12. REAL VIBES KEGAL SET ($16 to $50)

I saw these on sale for $20, which is great! But at the normal price of $50? Not so great, especially since the just a set of three.

I do like the cord attachment, which is great for newbies.

If you do get a cheap one, do a “burn test” to make sure it’s actually silicone.

13. DUOTONE BALLS ($6)

The shape and size are similar to the Dorcel Venus Balls. However, for 6 dollars, I couldn’t believe they would be anything decent.

First, a burn test revealed it to be plastic-based (real silicone won’t melt and will only leave a burn shadow or ash behind). The website description lied.

Then there were problems with the outer and inner casings – neither were affixed or glued properly and it would be impossible to clean.

Hi Elizabeth! I think that’s an excellent question for your doctor (the one who performed the surgery or someone who knows about the ins and outs of this procedure).
