What is Nyotaimori – A Quick Rundown of Body Sushi

WHAT IS IT?

Often called “body sushi” (女体盛り, “serve (foods) on the female body”) is basically using a woman as a serving platform for sushi or sashimi. You can also use a male model but then the name changes to Nantaimori (男体盛り).

WHERE DOES IT COME FROM?

The theory is it started in the Japanese samurai period. If they were victorious after a battle, a geisha would serve as the vessel for the celebratory feast – at least that’s the word on the street.

Now, it’s mostly practiced in North America – with many places banning it due to health codes.

IS IT SANITARY?

It entirely depends on the establishment. Just like any restaurant, places that practice it can vary from strict health codes to something that might give you a trip to the toilet.

You would think that any health problems would come from contact with the human body. However, in perfect practice, the model would wash thoroughly with scentless soap. Next would be a flesh-colored thong (or a partial thong) taped to cover the genitals. After that, they are lead to the serving table and their thong and nipples are hidden either with flowers, fruit, fabrics, or palm leaves.

The palm leaves are also used to cover the body and serve the sushi on – avoiding any body contact.

IS THERE ETIQUETTE?

Well, yes … and no. It depends on where you go. Best practices dictate that touching, talking, or any interaction with the model his HIGHLY frowned upon. You will, of course, find places that might allow touching – but then it comes down to the consent and integrity of the place/host.

You can, of course, stand and admire the model while using your chopsticks to pluck your favorite tidbits.

HOW ABOUT THE MODELS?

Most people’s first thought is that “ah, you just sit there – that’s easy”. But NO.

If done right, the sushi needs to remain cold (so the seafood doesn’t start to take on bacteria) – therefore the table or other elements must stay cool. This means you’re lying on a cold table for hours on end. Now imagine an itchy nose, muscle cramps, the want to sneeze – doesn’t matter … you cannot move at all.

OPINIONS ON THE PRACTICE?

Like most things, there are thoughts on both sides of the spectrum. Some people believe it to be a gorgeous historical art like looking at a beautiful painting while sipping wine (or in this case, sake). Others believe it demeaning towards women (even though male models are just as common).

A number of years ago I was a leader in our local bdsm community group. We hosted two nyotaimori/nantaimori banquets. They were spectacular. Enjoyed by all, especially our servers, a girl and a boy.
