It started with a spicy dream and a confession between the grocery aisles. What happens next is a candid look at how a couple can question old rules without losing trust.

I never stopped to ask myself if monogamy actually fit me. I’m queer, and I had never really been the “just stick to one thing” kind of person. I like options.

Then I had a spicy dream about my old boss. Woke up thinking: okay, so we need to talk.

So I said it out loud in the dry-goods aisle at Whole Foods. I looked at my partner and said, “I want to have sex with other people.”

He thought I was trying to break up with him. No breakup. No drama. Just: “I love you. We’re endgame. And also, I think I need more. I miss being with women.”

That was the truth I’d been sitting on. I told him that love is physical, emotional, and spiritual, and honestly, the emotional and spiritual parts matter more to me than the physical ever could.

Nerve-racking? Yes. Necessary? Also yes. Keeping it in felt way worse than saying it out loud.

So I did the research: ENM, open marriages, poly structures, until I found language for what already felt true to us.

Since then, communication hasn’t stopped being the whole game. Sometimes it’s a real conversation. Sometimes it’s a quick check-in before or after a date with someone else. Just enough to say “You good?” without turning it into a whole production. Small signals, same trust.

When he’s away on business trips, that connection doesn’t have to pause either. With remote-controlled toys, we still get to feel close and present with each other even when we’re apart.

Now I get genuinely giddy knowing my partner is having a great time. People tell us we aren’t like a normal married couple. Honestly, we’re more like best friends who happen to be soulmates and occasionally sleep with other people.

That’s what communication can do. It turns “I want something different” into “we built something better.”
